No Dr. under 10...

So Andersen just had his 18 month Dr.'s apointment and they did their normal assessment, height (which he is still in the 25% percentile), weight (45%) and head (75%), he got his shot, and the Dr. asked varying questions. When Dr. B asked about his vocabulary...this is how the conversation went DR- "So is he saying 50 or less words?" ME- "Actually less than that" DR- "20 or less??" ME- "Yeah, less than that" DR- "10 or less???" (I started hearing a growing concern in her voice) ME- "Um, yeah probably 5 or less, but he does know over 20 different words in sign language!" She didn't act concerned that he doesn't talk. Nor am I. He knows what we are saying, he can hear well (when he chooses to), and he signs when he wants something. And the fact each child is different, I won't grow concerned until he's entering Kindergarten. So thanks to my mom and sister, we can communicate with Andersen. He knows the following signs mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, cat, dog, milk, water, baby, book, stinkies (hold his nose), more, thank you, please, touchdown (don't think this really counts), Kip, Emily, No-No, night-night, excuse me.

There's a sign for "Kip?" What is it -- crack open a beer?

People always freak out over the not talking before 2 (not referring to you). I don't understand it. Biruk will be 18 months this month and he has a vocabulary of less than 10 words. Conner was speaking in full sentences at this age. They all learn differently. Let's see some pics of the big boy!!

He's your son, all right. You invent your own words, he uses sign language. His kids will no doubt communicate with interpretive dance.

On the plus side, you don't have to watch your language around him. You know he's not going to repeat what you say.
